Sadya Mizan is a Bangladeshi artist, curator, educator and creative facilitator based in Aberdeenshire. For over a decade, she has worked across the arts and cultural sector through exhibitions, artist residencies, research, learning programmes and workshops, with a particular interest in heritage, archives, cultural accessibility and community-led practice. Her work across Bangladesh, the UK and Europe has brought her together with artists, museums, cultural & heritage organisations and diverse communities including minor, marginalised, displaced and refugee communities. Drawing from her South Asian heritage and multicultural experiences, Sadya enjoys creating spaces for people to learn through making, while bringing traditional and contemporary practices together through visual art, textiles, craft, storytelling and everyday materials. She is the founder of Uronto Artist Community and co-founder of hArticulture, through which she develops accessible creative experiences connecting art, culture, heritage, nature and community.
Turn simple sheets of paper into a small sculptural book that unfolds and “explodes” open. Learn the folding and construction process before filling your book with colour, drawing, collage, words and other details. During the session, you will explore how a book can become much more than pages bound together. Sadya will guide you step by step through folding, assembling and decorating the structure, before helping you experiment with different ways of filling it with images, colours, words and personal details. You will be invited to reflect on a memory, experience, place or personal narrative and translate it into a book that unfolds in your own way. The process is playful and experimental, so there is no right or wrong way for your finished book to look. At the end, you will leave with a unique handmade explosion book containing a little piece of your own story. No previous bookmaking experience is needed, and all materials will be provided.
